Now You’re Talking Newsletter August Edition: Why Women Don’t Get Promoted

Hey everyone! Kajol here and I’ve just recently joined the Now You’re Talking Network team. So excited to show you what we have planned for the upcoming year and cannot wait to meet you all in person!

A bit about me, I’m a strategy consultant at Deloitte where I guide my clients on their strategic choices and help them to create new products and services. In my spare time, I make videos on Youtube to do with consulting, women in the workplace and corporate career tips. Check it out and subscribe if you’re interested — always keen to hear any feedback or topics you’d love to hear about.

In fact, my latest video tackled habits that women exhibit in the workplace that reduce their chances of getting promoted. To give you a teaser, research shows that, for women, the biggest obstacle to C-Suite positions is actually getting to Manager level. That’s why women only make up 38% of Manager positions. To help, here are three active changes that we can make today to stop us from getting stuck:

  • Claim your achievements — Tell people what you’re doing otherwise they probably think you’re not making an impact at all. Self promotions can be super uncomfortable. How can we shout about our achievements without coming across as bragging?

  • Build alliances — Keeping your head down is a massive no no. Building a support network that you can use to bounce around ideas, discuss challenges you’re facing and gain advice from can be useful to ‘lean’ on. I cannot stress enough the importance of building a network — NYT is a great start.

  • Say No — Taking too much on and overcommitting is one that I see a lot of women do. Whilst we’re only trying to please people, you’ll soon realise that you’ll get stretched to a breaking point and that negatively impacts your quality of work.
